Courses ITLS - International Trauma Life Support

Course Purpose

The magnitude of trauma as a national problem is documented by data
that identifies injury as the primary case of death in people under the age
of 45.

The Australian College of Emergency Nursing (ACEN) has acquired the sole distribution rights to the Basic Trauma Life Support Course (BTLS) as developed by the BTLS International, USA.

Overall Course Objectives

On completion of the course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Identify the common mechanism of injury associated with trauma
  2. Develop the skills necessary for rapid assessment and resuscitation
  3. Perform methods Patient packaging and transport

Course Content

  1. Scene Size Up
  2. Patient Assessment and Initial Management
  3. Shock Evaluation and Management
  4. Trauma to Chest and Abdomen
  5. Trauma to Head and Spine
  6. Trauma to Extremities
  7. Trauma to Burns
  8. Trauma in Pregnancy
  9. Trauma in Children
  10. Trauma in The Elderly
  11. Treatment of Patients under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs
  12. Packaging and transportation of Trauma patients

Psychomotor Skill Station Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a standardized, systematic and organized approach to assessment, Planning and intervention
  2. Perform primary and secondary assessments
  3. Describe appropriate interventions
  4. Skill stations facilitate application of theory in a risk free setting, which simulates trauma patient situations

Teaching stations include

  1. Patient Assessment
  2. Airway and ventilation
  3. Spinal immobilization
  4. Splitting
  5. Intravenous and Inter-osseous Infusion
  6. Helmet removal
  7. Rapid Extrication

Course Particpants

The candidate must be an advanced level practitioner (such as certified/licensed paramedic, registered nurse, enrolled nurses, military medics, doctors, other allied health professionals, prehospital care providers who holds suitable qualifications for entry, or persons deemed suitable based on previous experience and or pre-test as determined by the Australian BTLS Advisory Committee. There are two options for determining the provider status. Option 1 is that the governing organization board for the provider (such as Ambulance Service, Military) determines whether an advanced or basic certification will be attended. Option 2 is that the participant who does not encompass one of these organizations (such as enrolled nurse) can determine whether they wish to attempt the Basic BTLS Test or the Advanced BTLS Test based on their present qualifications.

The selection of the participants is at your discretion, however you need to remember that you have agreed to a course with 18 members. Failure to meet that number will result in an account for the remaining number being forwarded to you. Larger or smaller numbers are possible but must be negotiated with the BTLS committee of ACEN.

Course Completion

To successfully complete the course, participants must achieve a passing score of 74% on the multi choice exam and be awarded an “adequate” for the final testing scenario.

To be considered as a BTLS instructor a participant must achieve a passing score of 86% on the multi choice exam and be awarded an “excellent” for the final testing scenario.

The Australian College of Emergency Nursing Ltd. will award 24 inservice hours to participants who attend the entire course regardless of their performance during testing.

Course Materials

The comprehensive manual provides all the essential course material and should be thoroughly reviewed by the participant before the course utilizing adult education principles. The participants should receive their manuals 4-6 weeks prior to the course.

Non-members of ACEN: $550.00 incl. gst.
Financial members of ACEN: $500.00 incl. gst.
(includes manual, badge, certificate and international registration).
Invoices are available on request.

Please ensure that all of the completed forms and money are sent in the one envelope to the College so that the manuals can be distributed at the same time. This will allow for any problems with the distribution of the manuals to the participants being identified early. If you do not have the required number of participants and have to cancel the course within 8 weeks of the course there will be a cancellation fee of $500.00

Refund Policy

- Participants are not eligible for a refund once the manuals have been posted.
- Participants are not eligible for a refund for failure to attend the nominated course.

Special circumstances and course transfer may be considered on application to the Executive Director and must be received in writing before the course date.

Dates of the program are as negotiated by the Director of the ITLS program.

2 Day Format
Day 1: 0730 ­1800 (approx.)
Day 2: 0700 ­1500 (approx.)

Option 2: (reverification)
Day 3: 0700 ­1630 (see below)

Option 3: (reverification)
Day 2: 1200 ­1900 (see below)

Reverification Options

Option 1
Individual can take the entire course.

Option 2
Individual may undertake a one-day reverification course. This course could be added to follow a standard 2-day program and would require 2 Instructors, a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 10 reverification Candidates. Cost of this option available on request.

Option 3
Individual may take a “Challenge” and undertake the evaluation only. A course could accommodate a maximum number of 6 verification only participants. Cost of this option available on request.

Venue

A lecture room is required that will comfortably seat the nominated number of participants with tables and chairs.

  1. Lecture room should be suitable for multi media presentation
  2. Lectern
  3. Three (3), well lit and air-conditioned rooms similar to an examination room or cubicle that will comfortably accommodation an examination couch and seven (7) chairs
  4. One (1) office sized room for use by the faculty with table and chairs
  5. Area for the participants to have morning and afternoon tea
  6. Access to restrooms
  7. Please make every effort to ensure that the venue can be maintained at a comfortable room temperature for the participants

Additional Requirements

  1. Morning and afternoon tea is to be provided by you according to program times. Tea and coffee to be available throughout the program.
  2. Information regarding food outlets to be made available to program participants.
  3. Security for equipment after hours.
  4. Garbage bags or instructions for disposal of waste.
  5. If suitable facilities are not readily available for participants to obtain lunch, then some arrangements for the provision of a suitable meal at the participants expense may be necessary.

Models

2 Day format
Individual may take a “Challenge” and undertake the evaluation only. A course could accommodate a maximum number of 6 verification only participants. Cost of this option available on request.

  1. 1 exam proctor
  2. 3 models for final day practice and testing scenarios

- Both to be available from 0900 on day 2.
- Model should have no back of neck problems
- Model & proctor should not be intending to undertake the course in the future.
- Model and proctor should be at least 15 years of age.
- Model should be dressed comfortably and is requested to wear a necklace that is easily removed.
- Females should wear a crop top and bike pants.
- Models need to consent to being physically examined.
- Model and proctor will receive a payment of $40 a day.

Accomodation

Depending on the location of the course you may be asked to find out about suitable accommodation for the faculty within close proximity to the venue.
